CCHR Urges UN to End Psychiatric Abuses

Electroshock, forced drugging and restraints on children must end, CCHR tells UN.

At the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, CCHR addressed the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and urged a worldwide ban on coercive psychiatric practices—including electroshock and forced drugging—especially on children.

CCHR denounced governments’ failure to enforce international human rights standards and called for strong criminal penalties against those responsible for psychiatric coercion. CCHR’s presentation detailed the use of electroshock on minors across the globe. Despite laws banning ECT on children in parts of the US and Australia, the practice still continues elsewhere, including in Europe, even on children as young as 10 years old.

“Electroshock, psychosurgery, forced drugging, seclusion and restraint are not care—they are state-sanctioned abuse and must end,” said CCHR International President Jan Eastgate. “Upholding autonomy, dignity and liberty is non-negotiable.”

CCHR also warned about the alarming rise in antipsychotic prescriptions for children, citing data showing a 50–200 percent increase over the past two decades. These drugs can cause permanently damaging side effects.

In Geneva, CCHR urged UN member states to adopt WHO and UN human-rights-based mental health guidelines, ensuring that dignity and informed choice replace abuse and silence.

WE REALLY WANT TO hear FROM YOU

Those touring CCHR’s Psychiatry: An Industry of Death Traveling Exhibit shared their reactions:

CITY COMMISSIONER, FLORIDA, USA

“This exhibit needs to be seen by everyone. The abuse in the institutions is really horrible. Law enforcement needs to be more educated on this. The booklet CCHR provides on parental rights looks like a major asset to the communities here. I’m going to read it, and I would like CCHR to do presentations with our county staff and to parents in the community centers. I look forward to working with CCHR in the future.”

STUDENT, MEXICO CITY, MEXICO

“At first I thought this was a science that helped people recover from psychological problems. But now I see the lack of values and real information and how humanity has been degraded by these treatments.”

RESIDENT, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

“I have always been skeptical about the field as a whole. I believe it’s a callous and evil industry which is profiting off of people’s suffering.”

VISITOR, PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

“I always wanted to be a psychiatrist to help people heal quickly and safely—with words, because all problems stem from thoughts. And now I’m shocked, absolutely disgusted that what I considered a noble profession was and is being used to manipulate, hurt and abuse people for money.”

STUDENT, FRANKFURT, GERMANY

“This topic is hardly ever discussed, and I think it’s important that people are informed about it. It’s terrible what people have to go through, and all because they asked for help.”

MEDICAL STUDENT, RAVENNA, ITALY

“A raw exhibition, but it helps to better understand the evolution and the society in which we live. I liked it precisely because it was so raw and true. It really made me understand and realize how psychiatry has become what it is now: an abuse of psychotropic drugs.”
